Oil’s well
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
And it’s in these early moments that Still Wakes the Deep does its best work.
Things howl in the distance as you pass strange fleshy growths and piles of what used to be people.

And might still be, somewhere in the merged piles of meaty tissue full of twitching eyes.
There’s a simple effectiveness to the atmosphere throughout.
The lack of screen clutter adds to the immersion overall.

But, for the most part, there’s little to pull you out of the moment.
The oil rig and the sea are as much a character here as any creature or survivor.
I’ve also never seen video game water with such a tangibly oily, grimy film over it.

I can’t entirely put my finger on why, though.
